Ruettiger's story was told in the 1993 film Rudy, which starred actor Sean Astin in the title role. The film tells the story of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who dreams of playing football for the University of Notre Dame, despite several challenges in his way.
It was the first film that the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne, All-American in 1940. The film was written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh, both of whom were involved in Hoosiers. Ruettiger appeared in a cameo as a fan behind his father, played by Ned Beatty, during the final scene.
